You're in the face of every slim goatee,
all the urban jammers banging heads
to iPods and desperately clutching train poles,
the digital hipsters listening to singers tell
everyone else's kids how it's cooler to be the blues.
At Grand Avenue you glint in the shaved head
of another gold-hearted mope, someone
who hates his hair for no good reason,
with surroundings tuned out and snout
buried in the latest celebrity disrespect,
eardrums egged on by the same dumb thump.
The students, bankers, bums and beggars,
the cattle weighed down by Mag Mile bags,
all the frowning loads of northbound people
seem branded with the same stamp,
yours and mine, marking those in need
of a hug and a whack, or maybe just
a whisper in the ear implying
it's not too late.
