Abhisit officially endorsed as Thailand's 27th PM
BANGKOK, Dec 17 (TNA) - Newly-endorsed prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva pledged to work for all Thais and restore Thailands peace and order to end the political conflict and economic woes.
On Monday, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej officially endorsed Abhisit as Thailands 27th prime minister. At the Democrat Party headquarters on Wednesday, a royal decree was read before Mr. Abhisit and his wife Pimpen, democrat MPs and government coalition parties.
Mr. Abhisit pledged to launch a grand plan for reconciliation to tackle the current political conflict and economic hardship.
He was committed to working for Thai people in all parts of the country although they might or might not support him. He stressed it was impossible to make all Thais support him but he would listen to all sides.
Its my every intention to restore the picture of Thailand by which friends all around the world used to know us. I will do this through a grand plan of reconciliation based on the rule of law and democratic process, said the 44-year old premier.
On assuming the premiership, Mr. Abhisit also took on the role of Chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Thai premier announced that Thailand would host the upcoming ASEAN Summit early in 2009.
Mr. Abhisit also ensured the airport closures which stranded over 350,000 tourists in early December, would never happen again, adding Thailand is still tourist friendly. He reiterated he was still confidence in the capacity of Thailand and Thai people.
"We will make sure these are things of the past. They will never happen again and we welcome all of you as tourists, investors and partners," he said. (TNA)
